Portugal

Portugal’s pristine beaches, mild temperatures and diverse cities makes it a European treasure like no other.  Castles and fortresses rise from the highways to greet you as you enter most cities. The colorful tiles and eye catching artistry dominate every corner. A journey through Portugal should be on every travelers must visit list.

Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe and has a history of scarred with war and occupation since the gained it’s independence  the Kingdom of León in 1143.  While the capital of Lisbon gets most of the attention of tourist, cities like Porto and Tavira in the Algarve region are not to be overlooked.  I’ve made multiple trips over the course of the years and still feel like I’ve only just begun to tap into all that the country has to offer.  Every visit brings new discoveries and more places to love.

Discover Portugal

I’ve visited the country on multiple occasions and spent weeks exploring the vineyards of the sprawling wine country sampling oysters right out of the waters and navigating the hilly cities.  Check out some of the blog posts to gain insight into some of my adventures in Portugal.

When to Go

I honestly don’t think there is a bad time to visit Portugal. With year round mild temperature and the incredible amounts of sunshine, it is sometimes referenced as having the best weather in Europe.  Sure there is some variation from the North and the South but overall it is a real gem.

Where to Go

Portugal is such a paradise that it is really hard to pick the perfect jumping off point.  The easiest way to narrow the exploration field is to start with cities that are easier to get to from your starting point.  Look for airports  with international arrivals.  Like the ones found in Porto or Lisbon.  The upside is it’s easy to get to…the downside, everybody will be there.  Nothing like trying to experience local culture when they are flooded with visitors.

Let’s get you on your way with some details to make your decision easier.

Lisbon. This capital city has a little bit of everything.  Beautiful lookout points, incredible works of arts and amazing cuisine.  If you want the hustle of a big city  with the warmth of a small town, Lisbon is the place for you.  There is so much to see here but get ready, walking this city will be a test to your stamina.

Porto.  If you love to marvel at the ingenuity of civil engineers and sip on the sweet taste of wine, then Porto is the place for you.   This, the second largest city in Portugal will certainly give you a workout as you traverse the many hills that create this beautiful landscape.  You can feel the history of Portugal by just strolling along the cobblestone streets.

The Silver Coast.  If you dream of surfing and want to experience what it’s like to be a world class surfer, Ericeira can’t be missed.  A small seaside community in the heart of the silver coast that draws visitors from across the globe to its stunning coastlines and incredible surf.   When in the neighborhood, make sure you pop into Obidos and Nazare.

Douro Valley.  River cruisers meander slowly through the dramatic landscape stopping along the way to allow curious travelers to sample the wines.

Algarve Region. The southernmost region of the country evokes feelings of being in Mama Mia with its white washed buildings and sandy beaches, amazing cliffs and captivating fishing resorts.  Cities like Faro and Lagos can be found in this region.

My View

Portugal is quickly becoming a fan favorite.  I’m finding more and more people that are heading to this amazing coastal country with near perfect weather.  The food, the wine, the people, the history what’s not to love.
