Where to Go
Spain is certainly not a one visit type of country. To truly experience this gem, you will have tome back time and time again. With every visit you will find something new to love. Accordingly, I’ve listed a few of my favorites here but this is by far not all inclusive.
Barcelona. My absolute favorite city in Spain. Explore the architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Stroll down La Rambla, visit the Gothic Quarter, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Barri Gòtic. If you’re feeling spicy, head over to the beachside and dance the night away.
Madrid. There is no shortage of things to explore in Madrid. Visit the oldest restaurant in the world Botin, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Plaza Mayor or indulge in tapas at Mercado de San Miguel. Madrid. For the more refined, Visit the Prado Museum for art lovers, explore the historic Royal Palace, and spend time in Puerta del Sol.
Granada. Discover the breathtaking Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the Generalife Gardens and explore the historic Albayzín neighborhood. I tried goose barnacles for the very first time at a small neighborhood restuarant.
Seville. Be warned; do not attempt to drive through this historic city. Been there, tried that and parked the car until I left. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Alcazar Palace and the Seville Cathedral. Wander through the charming Barrio Santa Cruz, and experience the passion of flamenco in Triana.
Ibiza. You’ve heard stories about the party scene on this island. Ibiza is known for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches. When you’re not partying th night away, visit historic sites like Dalt Vila and take in the quieter sandy coves for a more relaxed visit to the island .
Ronda. This small town is set above a deep gorge has such a dramatic landscape that you have to stop to take it in. Bull fights were once very popular in this town and you can see remnants all over the city. From the Bullring of the Royal Calvary to photos adorning the walls of local restaurants.
When to Go
Major tourist destinations, especially Barcelona and Madrid, tend to be busier in the summer. If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall). In addition to less crowds, you’ll also find lower prices on hotels. Outdoor events and festivals generally take place during the summer season making the cities lively. Determine what type of experience you want to have and then select the time that is right for you. You can’t lose with Spain anytime of the year.
