Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region. The region’s fertile soils and diverse microclimates have cultivated a winemaking haven, producing some of Australia’s most celebrated wines. The region’s winemakers have mastered the art of crafting wines using unique varietals that capture the essence of the sun-soaked land. There is no better place to savor the wines of Australia than here.

Iconic Wineries

As with any wine region, there are so many underrated wines that never make it to the limelight and there are a few that stand out among the crowd as icons of the region. Four vineyards to highlight are here.

Tyrrell’s Wines. A family-owned institution, Tyrrell’s is a cornerstone of Hunter Valley winemaking, known for its exceptional Semillon and age-worthy Shiraz. For more than five generations, the Tyrrell family has been a pioneer in both the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industries. They now produce some of the most awarded wines in Australia.

Tulloch Wines. This family has produced wines since 1895, Tulloch is a staple of Hunter Valley. The rights of the Tulloch brand fell out of the family hands back in 1969. Jay Tulloch and his daughter repurchased the estate in 2001and and reinvigorated the brand. The award winning Shiraz and exceptional Chardonnays are not to be missed.

The Hunter Valley Cellar Door features a diverse range of beautifully crafted indoor and outdoor, family-friendly spaces.

Tower Estates. This estate is best known for its luxurious accommodations but the wines here are underrated and exceptional. You won’t find a huge tasting room or even much literature about the wines here. The visits are quaint. The tasting experience takes you through everything. The staff really understand hospitality. This one might be a bit harder to grab a tasting experience. However, the team at Tower estates go all out to ensure your enjoyment.

This list is far from all inclusive. Keeping this in mind, embark on the Hunter Valley Wine Trail. A journey that meanders through a mosaic of wineries each with its unique character and varietals to discover something exciting in wine.

More than Wine

Where there is great wine, you will also find great food. The Hunter Valley experience extends beyond wine, with a flourishing gourmet scene that complements the region’s viticulture. Indulge in farm-to-table dining experiences, where locally sourced ingredients are transformed into culinary masterpieces that pair harmoniously with the wines.

The valley has an ever-growing list of trendy new eateries. From those that accommodate the quick pop in to restaurants designed to impress the foodie, you can find it all in Hunter Valley. For some of the best eats, check out the restaurants at the wineries. If you play your cards right, you can sample some of the vineyard staple wines while you enjoy a delicious meal.

My View

A journey to Hunter Valley should definitely be on any wine lover’s list. The people are so friendly and the vineyards are just beautiful. Driving through the area is a treat for all of the senses. Take your time and visit as many wineries as you can and don’t leave the valley without a few bottles. Many of them can’t be found anywhere else.
