Thailand

This country nestled in the  southeast region of Asia offers a diversity of experiences.  From tropical beaches and lush jungles to bustling cities, Thailand has something to capture the hearts of every adventurer.   History buffs might know of the time with Thailand was called Siam.  The origins of this region dates back to ancient civilization much of which is on brilliant display throughout the country.  Here you will find rich cultural traditions, ornate  temples and many historic sites that are a testament to the country’s heritage.

Booking a visit to Thailand was very high on my bucket list for years.  I was super nervous for my first visit but really impressed by the time I left.   You feel the presence of the culture from the moment you exit the airport and by the time you arrive at your accommodations, you will already begin to appreciate the hospitality.

Where to go

While there is no shortage of places to visit in Thailand, there are a few that captures the attention of most visitors.  My time in Thailand gave me a great perspective of what the country has to offer.  You can find yourself basking in the sun on one of the serene beaches and islands like Phuket one day then resting up at a wellness retreat the next in Chiang Mai or  trekking your way through the jungle in Northern Thailand.   Thailand offers the ideal escape for someone looking to have a unique experience.

Bangkok

A  bustling metropolis Bangkok is where ancient palaces coexist with modern skyscrapers. This popular city is incredibly busy with tuk tuks buzzing around and temples everywhere. Visit the Grand Palace, home to the sacred Emerald Buddha, and experience the vibrant chaos of markets like Chatuchak. Explore the city’s dynamic street food scene and take a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River for a glimpse of Bangkok’s eclectic charm.

Phuket

Phuket long known for is party scene has far more to offer.  Tucked away in the Andaman Sea, the island of Phuket awaits with its turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and vibrant nightlife. Take some time to relax on Patong Beach, explore the bustling markets of Phuket Town or embark on boat trips to nearby islands like Phi Phi and James Bond Island. Phuket is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and those seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement.

Chiang Mai

Nestled in the mountainous north, Chiang Mai is a tranquil escape with a rich cultural heritage. Here you’ll find some amazing spas to disconnect and relax.  Discover ancient temples such as Wat Phra Singh, explore the historic Old City, and partake in the colorful festivities of the Yi Peng Lantern Festival. The surrounding hills offer opportunities for trekking and encounters with indigenous hill tribes.

Krabi

Krabi, with its stunning limestone cliffs, emerald-green waters, and pristine beaches, is a paradise for nature lovers. It was also the location for the final scene in one of the “Hangover” movies.  Railay Beach, surrounded by dramatic karst formations, offers rock climbing and breathtaking sunsets. Explore the nearby Phi Phi Islands and indulge in the laid-back atmosphere of Ao Nang.

When to Go

There are times of the year that are better than others to visit Thailand.  As a wise person once said to me, “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear.”  There is however a rainy/monsoon season. Some people happen to love this season as it brings less travelers and lowers prices for hotels but it could also bring a lot of rainy days.

The rainy or ‘monsoon’ season in Thailand occurs between July and October.  The summers can be unbearably hot which makes travel from end of April to May a bit tricky as well.  The overall best time to visit Thailand is between November and early April when the weather is just about perfect.

Ultimately make your decision based on what you are prepared to endure.
