Mexico

From ancient archaeological sites like Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, beautiful beaches in places like Cancun or Los Cabos and vibrant cities with colonial architecture Mexico has something for everyone. This county is massive.  It is bordered to the north by the United States, to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean, to the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea, and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico.  When you make a stop here, you get a little bit of everything.

The cultural heritage of Mexico has been influenced by the ancient civilizations of the Aztecs and Maya.  The complex history of the country including ancient civilizations, Spanish colonization, and a struggle for independence in the early 19th century have all had a significant impact on shaping the modern nation.

Where to Go

With so much to explore, it’s hard to narrow down the list to a few top choices.  Destinations like Cancun and Cozumel are popular for cruise ship passengers while Tulum and Cabo San Lucas appeal to travelers looking for a more laid back holiday.    Whether you are looking to experience mariachi music and tequila of Guadalajara or the well-preserved architecture of San Miguel de Allende the  best visit starts with you.  I’ve listed some of my favs here.

Tulum

Laid back bohemian chic are the words most use to describe Tulum. Situated on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, along the Riviera Maya.  Historically known for its eco-friendly and sustainable tourism initiatives, with many resorts and businesses prioritizing environmental conservation.  Tourist flock to Tulum for white sandy beaches,  turquoise waters and the artsy atmosphere.  Visit a cenote that is a natural sinkholes with crystal-clear freshwater, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Or discover the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Cabo San Lucas

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Cabo is known for its water-based activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat tours.  Many visitors head out for a sunset view of Land’s End (El Arco) a famous rock formation at the tip of the peninsula.  Historically known as a destination for the wealthy, Cabo has a range of hotel options for every budget.

Mexico City

The capital and largest city, Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis with a rich history, numerous museums (such as the National Museum of Anthropology), historic sites like the Zocalo and the Templo Mayor, and a lively arts and culinary scene.  Most recently listed as a top destination for expats, the community in  Mexico City is very diverse. There’s been an influx of digital nomads living in Mexico since remote work became more prevalent in the early 2020s and Mexico City is a popular option.

Cancun

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, resorts, and vibrant nightlife. It’s also a gateway to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum. Visitors fly into Cancun as a starting point for Playa Del Carmen and Tulum but Cancun is worth exploring.  Many new resorts have come to the area and the opportunity to explore neighboring towns is easy from here.

When to Go

A country with some much to offer make it difficult to decided when exactly is the best time to visit.  You first must decide what type of experience you want to have during your stay and then determine where and when you should go.  December to April is when the country experiences less rain. Summer sun seekers take advantage of cities like Cancun and Cabo San Lucas that experience plenty of sunshiny days through out the year.   While those looking to get lost in the jungle opt for cooler months between December and February.  Beware of hurricane season which runs from June to November, with the highest risk between September and October.
