Don’t get me wrong. Brussels is captivating in itself. With an awesome food scene, tons of museums and cool iconic venues to discover, you could spend weeks here and still need more time. After you have finished living it up in the capital, head northwest.

Fashion

Here you will find The Antwerp Fashion Academy, one of the most prestigious fashion schools globally that has produced many influential designers, including the famous “Antwerp Six.” Most people don’t know that Dries Van Noten and avant garde designer Ann Demeulemeester are both products of Antwerp.

Diamonds

If you have diamonds on your mind, look no further. Antwerp has been a leading center for the diamond trade since the 15th century. The Diamond District, located near Central Station, is home to thousands of diamond traders, cutters, and dealers. Visitors can explore diamond workshops, jewelry stores, and even attend diamond cutting demonstrations.

Beer

If you love beer, then you will love Antwerp. While you won’t find local micro-breweries or authentic Trappist tasting-rooms here, Antwerp is a showroom for the best of Belgian beer. You can pop into any number of bars to sample some of the rich flavors and unique brewing traditions of the region. In fact, take a guided beer walk through the city to discover some of the hidden spots in Antwerp. Belgians respect the craftsmanship of beer and always ensure it is served in the appropriate glass to showcase the color and flavor. Don’t leave the city without at least a sample of De Koninck, the iconic beer of Antwerp sure to be served in a bulbous bolleke glass.

Next Up: Bruges

You may have heard of this city in Belgium. After all, there was a full movie filmed here starring Colin Farrell. The movie scenes are mostly at night so you might have missed the true beauty of this city. Bruges is a picturesque city straight out of a fairytale. Its architecture, cobblestone streets, and serene canals have earned it the nickname “Venice of the North.” This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most enchanting cities in Europe, drawing visitors from around the world with its romantic ambiance and timeless beauty. Quaint alleyways lead to hidden courtyards, bustling marketplaces, and peaceful parks. You could wander here for days. I surely did.

Architecture

Bruges is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture. When you arrive here you feel like you have been transported back in time. The city’s historic center is a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets lined with towering Gothic buildings, ancient churches, and quaint almshouses. The Belfry of Bruges, with its iconic bell tower, offers panoramic views of the cityscape from its summit.

The Canals

The network of canals that wind through Bruges provided the city its distinctive character. The canals add a sprinkle of romance to the city. Take boat tours along the canals to get a different perspective of the charming bridges, medieval buildings, and lush greenery. The tranquil waterways provide a serene backdrop for exploring the city and offer a unique view of its architectural treasures.

Chocolate

Bruges is a paradise for food lovers, particularly those with a sweet tooth. Artisanal chocolatiers line the streets showcasing the exquisite chocolates. The city is home to around 60 chocolate factories producing quality chocolate oftentimes made by hand and without additives masking the flavors. Pop into a chocolate cafe to grab a bite of some of the 172,000 tons of chocolate produced in Belgium every year. While you are here take a tour of the 17th-century Castle of Harze houses to experience the Choco Story Chocolate Museum.

Finally: Ostend

This is definitely a hidden gem. Ostend, often referred to as the “Queen of the Belgian Coast,” is a vibrant seaside resort city located just across the North sea from London as far west as you can go in Belgium. It has long been a popular destination for tourists seeking sun, sea, and relaxation. Definitely not one of the busiest cities in Belgium but certainly can hold it’s own in terms of beauty.

Beaches

Ostend’s expansive sandy beaches are the main draw for visitors, offering ample space for sunbathing, swimming, and beach activities. Restaurants, cafes, and shops line the city’s wide promenade that stretches along the coastline, making it a popular spot for leisurely strolls and people-watching. During the summer months, the beach comes alive with festivals, concerts, and sporting events.

Events and Festivals

Throughout the year, Ostend hosts a variety of cultural events and festivals that showcase its artistic and musical talents. The Ostend at Anchor festival celebrates the city’s maritime heritage with a gathering of historic ships and nautical-themed activities. The Theater aan Zee (Theater by the Sea) festival brings together performers from across Belgium and beyond for a diverse program of theater, dance, and music.

My Perspective

While Brussels may be the gateway to Belgium, the country’s other cities offer a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered. From the medieval charm of Bruges, the vibrant cultural scenes of Antwerp or the laid back beaches of Ostend each city has its own unique character and attractions. So, step off the beaten path and embark on a journey through the cities in Belgium, where history, art, and culinary delights await at every turn.
