      Wonderful Indonesia

Over the last few years, everyone has been heading to Indonesia including me. More specifically to Bali. I’m sure you’ve seen the photos of Black women sitting on the swing over looking a rice field with the long dresses flowing behind. Simply breathtaking view of this Asian country.

But there is more to Indonesia than flying high above the rice paddies. There is an incredible amount of traditional temples all over the country and most of them are open to visitors. Just be mindful and respect the fact that this is a place of worship.

      white concrete houses in Nepal

Nepal On Top of the World

Still high on my list of spots to visit is Nepal. The fact that it sits in the Himalayas has fascinated me for decades. And because of the deep religious beliefs it is a great place for Black travelers.

Check out Kathmandu where the locals are accustomed to seeing tourist wander by seeking adventure. They have been described as hospitable and curious perhaps because of their faith or maybe because they are not used to seeing Black people. There just aren’t that many of us doing a hike in the Himalayas.

Nonetheless, it is a great destination for adrenaline junkies and those looking to explore the Annapurna circuit. And since it is pretty isolated, you won’t have trouble finding cool places to simply relax and enjoy the hospitality.

      When to Travel to Asia

There is no easy answer to question when is the best time to travel to Asia. It all really depends on where you are going and what you want to experience. But here is a guide to help you plan more effectively.

If you want to hit Southeast Asia, the best time to visit is generally from November to February. This includes Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam from this list. During this period you’ll experience the dry season which includes clear skies, long periods of sunshine, and lower humidity. This is also the time most tourist also visit so it’s pretty busy and prices may be higher.

Travel to East Asia between March to May and September to November (spring and autumn). This is when you want to hit Japan. If you go in late March you can also catch the beautiful Cherry Blossoms in season. Some cities host large festivals during this time as well.

South Asia is at its finest from October to March (winter and early spring). This is the time to make the hop over to Nepal. During this period, you’ll find clear skies and mild temperatures making it ideal for trekking and sightseeing. You’ll get clear views of the mountain ranges and lush vegetation since monsoon season has ended.

      Where Else

Of course, this post doesn’t cover all of the incredible places to explore in Asia. I don’t think one guide could effectively do that. But these five picks will certainly be enough to occupy your travel dream list for years to come.

If you are looking to explore further, try Singapore or the Maldives. Just know that Singapore is pretty clean and there are a lot of expats around. The Maldives feel more isolated than most but is perfect for the ‘checking out of it all’ type of escape.

      My Perspective

Asian countries felt out of reach for me for a long time. Once I made the first trip over to Malaysia, I knew I was destined to come back to the region. You can get custom suits in a matter of days for the cost of a pair of jeans in the US and don’t get me started on the food. There are very few places in the world where you’ll experience the kind of 5 star service that you’l find in some of these fascinating Asian countries.

Asia offers a wealth of adventure opportunities and should be on the top of the list for Black Americans looking for a culturally rich experience. Each country has unique experiences that combine the best of culture, relaxation and adventure. Plan right and you might just find stories you’ll be sharing for years to come. My adventures here are certainly engrained in my memories. I’ve never regretted the length of the flight of the cost of the trip. Every bit of it was absolutely worth it.
