If you are heading to Zanzibar, make sure you add at least one of these spots to your itinerary.
1. Cape Town Fish Market
This restaurant sits in one of the busiest sections of the harbor. Here you can see locals getting in a bit of football (soccer for the Americans) and kids having fun jumping off the small cliff as the sun makes its way below the horizon.
There is an extensive list of adult beverages available and you’ll be pleased to know that happy hour starts just in time for the perfect sunset view.
Tip: It can get pretty busy here but if you head up to the second level you can get the best view without all of the crowds.
2. 6 Degrees South Grill and Wine Bar
This spot is perfect for those looking to relax with modern vibe and an extensive drink selection to keep you hydrated. Just don’t leave without trying the desserts. They are delightful!
It’s in a happening area of the city center that offers the perfect panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and Zanzibar’s coastline.
Tips: Ideal for solo travelers or small groups, this spot has a trendy vibe and often draws a diverse crowd.
3. Maru Maru Hotel Rooftop Restaurant & Bar
Known for its vibrant rooftop parties and sunset views, Maru Maru is a favorite for younger crowds.
It’s an excellent spot to mingle with both locals and travelers. They have a rooftop pool but it’s only available to guests of the hotel.
A few nights of the week, there is a live band to help ease you into the evening.
Tips: Great place to capture sunset photos and enjoy nice bites of Zanzibari seafood specialties.
4. Swahili House Hotel
This historic hotel has a rooftop that provides a cozy atmosphere and stunning sunset views. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as soon as you enter the open air lobby.
It sits in the middle of Stone Town with views of neighboring rooftops and a direct line of site to the Indian Ocean. Be prepared to deal with some pretty steep stairs to experience it. I found the elevator to not be as reliable as you’d hope.
Tips: Ideal for history buffs or travelers wanting an old-world feel.
5. Park Hyatt Veranda
While technically not a rooftop, the veranda at the Park Hyatt offers stunning views to the harbor and Indian Ocean.
Go here if you want to add a little luxury to your evening libations. Its prime location puts you right in the middle of the most happening part of town.
Do a little local shopping then pop in here for a memorable evening of dinner and drinks at sunset.
Tip: This one is a bit more posh than most and is a designated UNESCO heritage site.
Notable Mentions
If you are not into rooftop bars, you could also consider a dhow cruise to see the sunset from the water. It’s a very popular choice but you should note that unless you have a private charter, you might feel a bit crowded on the dhow. The vendors certainly pack them with tourists looking for a one of a kind experience on this iconic vessel. Just know that you will also have to wade through some water to board and disembark the ship as there are very few boat docks available. Dress accordingly.
The Rock is a super popular (technically not a rooftop) location to experience the sunset. This unique restaurant sits on a rock off the coast and offers incredible sunset views. Dining here is a truly immersive experience with the Indian Ocean as a backdrop. Be warned, it is a top tourist attraction and the price point will remind you of it. This also means it gets busy so book in advance if this is on your list. Finally, check the tide schedule, as you may need a boat to get here at high tide.
Other Considerations
Stone Town is a compact city and the streets are super narrow. You can bank on the fact that you will be walking to your destination so make sure you come prepared with super comfortable shoes. In fact, your only option for transportation aside from walking will be a Tuk Tuk or the back of a motor scooter. Just make sure you negotiate the price up front so you are not surprised when they drop you off.
Factor getting lost into your schedule as it is inevitable if you are walking. It’s a compact city but the streets aren’t really marked and your gps will ultimately lead you to a few dead end alleyways as there is a fair amount of construction around. That said, the locals are super friendly are always willing to point you in the right direction.
Rooftop Etiquette and Tips for Sunset Viewing
You’ve probably been wandering around town all day and have catching the sunset on the top of your evening wind down list. Just keep in mind, there are a few things to ensure you can experience the magic of the rooftop sunsets in StoneTown.
First, plan to arrive early. The sunset happens quickly once it hits the horizon and you don’t want to arrive after it’s all over. If you do, there are still plenty of colors lighting up the sky even after the sun has set. Get there early to unwind with a drink and a few snacks as you set the mood for a serene sunset experience.
Next, rooftops can get breezy in the evening, even in Zanzibar. It might be helpful to bring a light jacket or shawl to stay comfortable while waiting for the sunset.
Finally, share the space. If it’s a crowded rooftop, avoid monopolizing prime viewing spots for too long. Consider moving after taking your photos so others can also enjoy the view.
My Perspective
Capturing the beauty of Zanzibar sunsets will certainly test the storage limits of your camera. I have enough sunset videos and photos for a lifetime. While the sunset is something that you’ll absolutely want to share on your social media, make sure you put down the phones and take it all in.
You’ll never be able to capture the true beauty of the moment through a camera lens but your memories will mark the moment best and deliver a timeless experience.
