Discover the Best Restaurants in St Barts: A Culinary Guide

Let’s face it, you don’t go to St Barts expecting to have an inexpensive vacation. This island is known for its luxurious lifestyle and the culinary scene is aligned to this reputation. St. Barts is not just a destination for sun-seekers and luxury travelers—it’s also a paradise for food lovers. The restaurants in St Barts are among some of the finest in the world. Here legendary chefs bring their culinary skills to amaze the palates of discerning diners stepping off their yachts looking for the best.

Beachfront Dining

Imagine sinking your toes into soft sand while enjoying a sumptuous meal with the sound of gentle waves as your soundtrack. Grab your fanciest beach sandals and get ready to indulge at one of the many beachfront dining options. Fresh seafood is always on the menu but so are tropical cocktails and breathtaking sunsets.

Nikki Beach clubs are renowned around the world. The St Barts outpost is no exception. Chic beachgoers make a stop here for the live music and signature cocktails. Grab one of the few daybeds at the end of your meal and enjoy the rest of your afternoon bathing in the sun. Make sure you reserve in advance because they go fast. Day parties is what Nikki Beach is known for so dress for the occasion in the latest beach wear and get ready to lose yourself in an XXL classic margarita.

GypSea. Hiding in the shadows of Eden Rock and Nikki Beach on the eastern end of the beach of Saint-Jean, you will find GypSea. This one may not get as much attention as the aforementioned beach clubs but it can hold its own. I especially enjoyed accras de morue (cod fritters) a local speciality. If you want to make a day of it, you can wander on over to the beach and order a pitcher of sangria. It will certainly make your afternoon a bit more interesting.

Le Toiny. In a surprising outpost on then “wild coast” you will find Toiny Bay and Le Toiny Villas. Once you arrive, jump into the back of a Land Rover Defender and get your cameras ready. As you make your way along the rugged coastline, you will have amazing views of the coast. At the end of the drive, you arrive at Le Toiny Beach Club. The view is picturesque, the service is delightful and the cocktails will bring you great joy.

Fine Dining Establishments

Despite its small size, St. Barts boasts an impressive array of fine dining establishments that cater to even the most discerning palates.

L’Esprit Jean-Claude Dufour. With its intimate ambiance and exquisite French cuisine, it’s no surprise that L’Esprit is known as one of the best restaurants in St Barts. The setting gives off vibes of a romantic movie with diners in the tropical garden, surrounded by palm trees and candles. The food here is some of the best on the island. I was unable to land a reservation on either of my visits to the island but check with your local concierge and perhaps you’ll get lucky.

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon. Much like its counterparts around the globe, this restaurant provides all the fanfare that you’ve come to expect from Michelin rated Robuchon. Here you are sure to enjoy freshest local ingredients prepared with finesse and creativity. If you have energy after your meal, head upstairs to ITA for a drink over looking the bay. Or if you want some a bit more laid back, plan to enjoy dinner at ITA and watch the sunset over cocktails.

Ocean Club. Set within the Prada and Dolce & Gabbana building in Gustavia facing some of the most luxurious yachts in the world is Ocean Club. Come early to grab a cocktail with light bites at sunset but stay late to enjoy a fabulous dinner.

If you are feeling adventurous, go for the tasting menu but save room for dessert. The caviar illusion is a treat for the eyes and your tastebuds. Don’t worry, it’s not really caviar.

Dining with a Party Vibe

If you’ve rested up from your day time debauchery and are not yet ready to let the party vibe go, you are in luck. Some of the best restaurants in St Barts also pride themselves in hosting a great party. You’ll be screaming over the music and enjoying some of the best food in St Barts at one of these establishments.

Bonito. This place is a hot scene. Fashionistas put on their sexist ensembles to enjoy a dining experience with panoramic views like no other. Seafood is the star of the menu with an array of Peruvian ceviches and Tiraditos. But if fish is not your things, there is one of the best Waygu Beef dishes I’ve had in some time to tickle your tastebuds. If you love a great soufflé , Bonito has one for you. Just know you must order in advance if you want to enjoy this delight.

Bagatelle. If you know Bagatelle, you know they throw a great party. The location in St Barts is no exception to that distinction. Come late for the dinner and stay later to enjoy the vibe. Indulge in one of their signature cocktails like the Saint -Barth Sour while getting your chair dancing moves underway. You can party here until 1am during the week and 2am on weekends.

BeefBar. A relatively new addition to the St Barts dining scene but well known around the world for its great cuts of beef. Located in the luxurious Hotel Barriere Le Carl Gustaf high above the scene in Gustavia is this gem. This is one you don’t want to miss. Take a seat on the outdoor balcony and keep your ears open for the dance tunes coming from within. The beef is what you would expect from this outpost. Melt in your mouth deliciousness. But save room for dessert because the Marbled Chocolate Bar is a must.

Casual Eateries and Cafes

Not every meal has to come with bread service and a $100 per person price tag. For a more laid-back dining experience, explore the charming cafes and bistros scattered across St. Barts’. A few standouts include:

  • Le Select, located in Gustavia, is an institution on the island and well known for its legendary cheeseburgers. Pair your meal with an ice-cold beer and soak in the lively atmosphere of this iconic hangout spot.
  • For a taste of authentic French pastries and gourmet coffee, head to La Petite Colombe in St. Jean. This cozy cafe is the perfect spot to start your day with a delicious breakfast or indulge in a sweet afternoon treat.
  • if you are just in the mood for a simple burger, hop over to JoJo Burger. They have about 10 different burgers on the menu, including a fish and a veggie burger.

My Perspective

I’ve only scratched the surface of what’s available on the island. It’s hard to comprehend how such a small island can be blessed with so much amazing food. The food scene here easily rivals those of major culinary capitals. The restaurants in St. Barts offers a gastronomic adventure like no other. It will put a hurting on your wallet but your tastebuds will rejoice.
