Are you ready to explore destinations that are not only trending in 2025 but are also perfect for first-time travelers? Dive into our handpicked list of remarkable places designed to ease you into the world of international adventures. We’ve selected one from each continent (excluding Antarctica) that are awe-inspiring destinations perfect for first-time travelers.

The world is big and there are so many places to explore. Some are overrun with tourist and others feel like you are stepping back in time. I dove into my archives to find a few destinations that offer unique experiences, are beginner friendly and provide unforgettable memories. A couple of them are also on my 2025 Destination list.

Whether you dream of sun-soaked beaches, busy cities or something in between, there’s something here for you.

1. Porto, Portugal (Europe)

Most people go to Portugal and head straight to Lisbon. While I love Lisbon, Porto in my opinion has an undeniable charm that is hard to find in the country’s southern capital. Stepping into Porto feels like stepping back in time. The narrow streets were built in a time before cars. The bridges showcase the ingenuity in design. The tiled buildings tell the stories of the past. Everything about this city pulls you to it. And if that’s not enough there is the port wine.

This is the home of the famous port wines. And I love a great port so this city speaks to me. The fragrance encompasses the city like a wonderful perfume. And since the wineries are everywhere, it is really easy to get a tasting.

But Porto is not just about port wines. The architecture is absolutely stunning and there are a few places you should absolutely see. If you are into Harry Potter, check out the Livraria Lello bookstore. It’s rumored that JK Rowling was inspired by the staircase and details when she envisions a few scenes for the movie. Head up to the top of the Dom Luís I Bridge for an amazing view of the city. And I can’t say enough about the dining scene. There is this amazing food hall (Mercado Bom Sucesso) that has everything you ever wanted in a food scene. If you want a fancier night, step away from the regular tourist areas to enjoy some of the best seafood around.

If you have more time, take a day trip out to the Duoro Valley to taste even more wines. I would recommend you join a tour or at least have a driver as the roads are super scary to navigate. Check out my blog on The Ultimate Guide to Getting Around Portugal to get even more insights.

2. Medellín, Colombia (South America)

A decade ago, I could have never imaged Medellín as a vacation destination. Medellín has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis over the past few decades. What was once known for instability is now celebrated for its innovation and urban renewal. This city is living proof of resilience and its energy is infectious. Like any large city, Medellín has areas that are safer than others so you should certainly exercise diligence.

This city has been nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring,” because of its near perfect weather. Medellín has mild temperatures year-round, averaging 72°F (22°C) which makes it a perfect destination any time of year.

For Black Travelers it’s important to note that while there is a large Afro-Caribbean population in Colombia, Medellín is not the epicenter of Afro-Colombian culture. Even still, you’ll find the influences in the food where you can enjoy Colombian platter featuring rice, beans, plantains, chorizo, and avocado. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Because of the resurgence of this city, you will find a modern public transportation system. It’s clean, safe, easy to navigate and affordable. Public transportation options like Medellín’s innovative metrocable system connects neighborhoods high in the surrounding hills to the city center. It’s not only practical but also offers breathtaking views of the valley. As a first-time visitor, this ride doubles as a transportation mode and sightseeing adventure.

Explore Comuna 13 to get close to the street art scene or do a day trip to Guatapé to get some great photos perfect for boosting your instagram feed. And if you want to work for a great photo, head out to El Peñol Rock (La Piedra del Peñol) to get some incredible panoramic views. But you will need to climb some 740 steps to see it.

3. Cape Town, South Africa (Africa)

I’ve visited Cape Town a couple of times and would return in a heartbeat. This country has everything you would expect from an African destination and more. Yes, it’s a bit of a hike to get there but it’s getting easier than ever with airlines like United offering direct flights from the US. And once you are in South Africa, you have a wealth of exciting options to keep you entertained.

Cape Town is a dream framed by the South Atlantic ocean and incredible mountains. The most famous of them is Table Mountain which you definitely want to go up to get the view from the top. You can hike or take the easier option of the cable car.

On a clear day you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and coastline from the summit. But bundle up as it can get breezy and a bit cold on top.

For the adventurous, there are a few hiking trails that offer a more immersive way to reach the summit.

If you are interesting in history, take a ferry ride over to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island. This is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Tours are led by former political prisoners, providing an emotional and authentic narrative of South Africa’s journey to freedom.

On the mainland, wander around the V&A Waterfront or explore the colorful neighborhood of Bo-Kaap which is one of the most photographed areas in Cape Town. Visit the District Six Museum and Langa Township to get more meaningful insight into the city’s past and present.

If you are up for exploring outside of the city take a drive to the Cape Peninsula to hang out with the penguins at Boulders Beach. And if penguins aren’t your thing, head out to the Cape Vineland’s to sample the delicious wines of the region. Check out my blog on The Wine Region of South Africa for some inspiration.

While Cape Town might not be ideal for a safari adventure, it certainly is possible for someone who doesn’t have the time to make the jump up to Kruger National Park.

4. Kyoto, Japan (Asia Pacific)

Most people will head to Japan spend the entire holiday in Tokyo. While Tokyo is fabulous and certainly worth a visit, you will definitely want to add Kyoto to your destination list. Kyoto is often called the cultural heart of Japan and is perfect for first-timers looking for an authentic Japanese experience. There are some 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites within the city including temples and shrines that will make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time.

Kyoto offers a slower pace than Japan’s big metropolises like Tokyo or Osaka. It has a tranquil atmosphere and is almost magical in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Spend some time in the Gion district where you can participate in a traditional tea ceremony or learn to dress like a geisha during your visit. Take a guided walking tour to learn about the history and culture of this unique area.

Add Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) to your experiences in the area. This breathtaking Zen temple is covered in gold leaf that reflects beautifully in its surrounding pond.

On a sunny day you can get amazing photos of the temple’s shimmering effect in the pond. You can spend hours wander the gardens of this former retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.

If you are an early riser, head over to Arashiyama Bamboo Grove take a walk through the iconic grove of towering bamboo stalks. A walk here offers photo-worthy moments and a sense of serenity.

Kyoto city’s buses and trains are efficient, easy to navigate and stress-free. That said, the city is highly walkable if you prefer more traditional exploring. Bring comfortable walking shoes for temple visits and city exploration. Kyoto’s cobblestone streets and temple steps can be challenging in heels. Pro tip: Since you will have to remove your shoes to visit the temples, something that is easy to slip on and off will be ideal.

Overall Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, and Kyoto is no exception to that. You can feel at ease while exploring its streets, even at night. As a Black traveler, you may see of curious stares as you wander around the city. We even had a few students stop us to take photos as if we were celebrities (see earlier photo).

5. Queenstown, New Zealand (Asia Pacific)

If you love outdoor adventure, then Queenstown should sit high on your list of must visit destinations. It offers jaw-dropping natural beauty and thrilling adventures packed in a compact and walkable city. Queenstown sits beside the crystal-clear Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by the Southern Alps. It is a visual masterpiece and every turn offers postcard-worthy views.

Queenstown’s popularity means accommodations and activities can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. A visit in winter means you can take advantage of world-class skiing, while summer offers hiking, lake activities, and wine tours. Just remember that the seasons are opposite of the northern hemisphere which means summer in New Zealand (December to February) is when the US experiences winter.

Queenstown is all about adventure, but don’t feel pressured to do every extreme activity. If you’re up to it ride the steepest gondola in the Southern Hemisphere for panoramic views of Queenstown. At the top, try your hand at a luge ride down a twisting track. Head over to Milford Sound if have you itching to go cliff diving on the dramatic cliffs. And the cascading waterfalls will certainly put you in the mood for a cool swim or a heart stopping bungee jumping adventure.

I am more about the wine. And New Zealand is the perfect place to experience some amazing Sauvignon Blancs or Pinot Noir.  Make a trip over to Central Otago to try the world-famous Pinot Noir. Take a guided wine tour through the picturesque vineyards and sample the region’s best vintages. Some tours even include gourmet meals which makes it a full culinary experience.

While getting here will take a bit of stamina, you’ll find it well worth the long journey when you’re immersed in unforgettable experiences and your instagram feed is popping. I’ve already added Queenstown to my must visit destination list for 2025.
