The most common phrase you will hear in December is “It’s hard to believe it’s the end of the year, already.” Yes, time flies when you are not being intentional about it. You start the year off strong and before you know it you are scrambling to use the rest of your vacation time or even worse regretting how you have used it. Sadly, a lot of people are faced with the reality that they have wasted their limited vacation time by choosing the wrong dates, wrong destinations or simply putting it off until later. Let’s not do that again. If you are ready to level up your vacations in 2026, I have the tips you need to plan smarter and bigger so you can look back next December with glee.

This is an unpopular opinion but most people don’t need more vacation time, they simply need to learn how to use it smarter. The difference between a meh travel year and the best vacation of your life usually comes down to five decisions you’re probably overlooking.
The truth is you can have dramatically different results and better trips simply by making a few strategic changes. In this post, I’m sharing actionable steps that work for any budget.
The Keys to Leveling Up Your Vacations
If you’re lucky, you get two weeks of vacation per year. That’s only 10 days. With that limited amount of time, you want to make sure you are making the most of it. The good news is there are some strategies seasoned travelers rely on to get better hotels, smoother itineraries and more memorable experiences without overspending. Here are the tips you need to make the most of your vacations in 2026.

Choose Destinations Based on Seasons, Not Trends
It’s hard to flip through your social media feed without seeing tons of influencers all descending on the same “trendy” destination at the same time. They are all at the same iconic spot and sharing why this is the best place to be. Everyone is heading to Europe in summer and to Rio in Spring. But here’s why you shouldn’t follow the crowds.
What they don’t show are the hoards of people all standing around to get the same photo. Just because a place is popular doesn’t mean it’s worth it, especially during peak travel months. The crowds are relentless and prices will make your bank account buckle.
Instead of joining the crowds for a less than ideal experience, try some smart swaps (like skipping Europe in summer) to ensure you are at the right place at the right time. I’ve shared some strategies for finding Hidden Gems vs Overhyped Tourist Spots in an earlier blog post that I encourage you to review. Use the simple techniques I’ve shared to ensure you protect your budget and elevate your experience.
Upgrade One Part of Your Trip Instead of the Whole Trip
If you are watching your wallet but still like to experience luxury when you travel, there are a few simple hacks to ensure you have the best of both worlds. I like to think of it as being Bougie on a Budget.
My favorite hack is traveling during Shoulder Season. You can learn more in my blog Shoulder Season Travel in Europe. It’s one of the simplest ways to stretch your travel dollars further.

If shoulder season doesn’t work for you then there are a few other ways to still have a luxury experience without breaking the bank. Choose a single “elevated” moment like booking a boutique hotel or scoring a business-class upgrade using one of my other hacks. I’ve shared more about this in Travel Tips series available on YouTube.
Finally, I always pick one special experience during my trip to splurge. That could be a five star dinner or hiring a private driver and guide to tour me around the city. The trick to luxury may simply be planning around the most memorable moment rather than every moment needing to be perfect. Somedays booking a cabana by the pool is the only lux flex you need for your trip.

Build Flexible Itineraries Instead of Rigid Schedules
If you’ve ever been on a vacation with someone where every minute of every day was scheduled, then you understand how draining that can actually be. Vacations shouldn’t feel like an episode of the Amazing Race. Over-scheduling ruins vacations and creates unnecessary stress.
Luxury isn’t about doing everything. The best experiences happen when you leave room for discovery.
I like to use a 3-2-1 rule when traveling. That is choose 3 major activities, book 2 special meals, and have at least 1 flexible evening. Doing this on a one week trip leaves you feeling like you’ve seen the major stuff while not being over committed and running all over the place (been there, done that).
Stack vacation days with company holidays
The simplest way to make your limited vacation days go further is by stacking. Stacking is the process of booking vacations around public holidays to give you more time. But you have to do this strategically.
Keep in mind US holidays and global holidays aren’t always the same. While we are celebrating July 4 or Thanksgiving, other places are not. These are the best opportunities for stacking. I visited Egypt a few years back over Easter and it was one of the best decisions I could have made.

Just make sure you are paying close attention to peak travel seasons in the destinations you are planning. There is no need to go to Europe in summer but heading off to South Africa instead is an entirely different ballgame.

Use Tools & Have A Strategy
In today’s world there are so many tools out there to help you save money and make smarter decisions when it comes to creating a memorable vacation. You no longer have to rely on books that were published years ago or wait for airlines to tell you they are having a sale.
While I wouldn’t recommend using ChatGPT to plan your entire vacation, I would suggest you leverage it to gather insight into a destination. It can help you identify important sites to visit and even foods to try. Although I would recommend you double check that the places are still operating. AI can definitely get that wrong.
Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to track flight prices and set alerts early to help you reduce travel costs. Download Rome2Rio to help you with on the ground transportation. I’ve wasted many hours trying to create the best route between destinations and around town while Rome2Rio can give you the insight you need in minutes.
Finally, use maps to mark specific locations or attractions that you are interested in exploring so you have everything in one place. This can be incredibly helpful if you’re trying to figure out the best neighborhood to stay for your vacation.
These are just a few of the travel apps that I’ve used to make my travel planning easier and more efficient. Check out my blog on Simplifying Travel Planning for more details on apps and tools that I use.
My Perspective
Leveling up your 2026 vacations starts with smarter decisions, not bigger budgets. Taking simple steps like choosing the right destination for the right season creates a smoother and more enjoyable experience. Booking during ideal seasons can ensure you aren’t wasting money or suffering avoidable crowds and heat.
You want to ensure you are maximizes your limited vacation time with smart strategies that help you plan better. Doing vacation stacking is an easy trick to get longer vacations when you can’t get more time in 2026. Then strategically upgrade a part of your trip that will give you that luxury-feeling without the luxury prices.
Most importantly, use technology to your advantage. Leverage tools to help you not only save money but to unlock better experiences.
