BRAZIL

Brazil is the largest country in South America, comparable in size to the continental United States of America.  This vast and incredibly diverse country offers a bit of everything for a traveler.  From vibrant cities and stunning beaches to the immense Amazon rainforest, this is a country that is top of the list for adventure seekers.   Cities like São Paulo are massive and where you’ll find the largest population and international businesses.  Head to Rio for the iconic beaches and party scene.  Pop over to the Amazon Rainforest and Pantanal to immerse yourself in the wild.

What You Need to Know

Indigenous peoples inhabited the land for thousands of years before the European arrival. It wasn’t until April 1500, when the Portuguese fleet arrived marking the beginning of Portuguese colonization to what is now known as Brazil. While no longer a Portuguese colony, the impact of the colonization is a part of the country’s identity.

Many visitors are surprised that the official language is Portuguese, not Spanish. While some English is spoken in major tourist areas, learning a few basic Portuguese phrases (like “Oi” for hi, “Tudo bem?” for how are you, “Por favor” for please, and “Obrigado/a” for thank you) will significantly enhance your experience.

What to Do

When you think of Brazil you think of the beaches.  The country boasts thousands of miles of coastline with iconic beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema in Rio, as well as secluded paradises in the Northeast (e.g., Jericoacoara, Fernando de Noronha, Bahia’s coastline).    Others have visions of living their best life during Carnaval. It’s an unforgettable experience for those seeking high-energy festivities.

If you are not ready to put on your skimpiest bikini to party it up during Carnaval, you’ll be happy to know the Brazil is home to 60% of the world’s largest tropical rainforest.  This makes it a  a prime destination for ecotourism and wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can experience unique river cruises, jungle treks, and spot incredible biodiversity, from pink river dolphins to sloths and macaws.

When to Go

The country is massive so there is anytime is a great time to visit depending on what you are looking to experience.  Brazil is south of the equator which means, when it’s summer in the US it is winter in Brazil.   Summer brings higher prices, larger crowds, and lots of rain in the Amazon and Pantanal (though this can offer unique canoeing opportunities in the Amazon).

I found winter in Rio to be amazing.  During winter you’ll find cooler temperatures, less humidity, and drier conditions across much of the country.  Spring can be hit or miss.  The temperatures are starting to increase and the crowds are starting to show up.
